What are the dangers of doing yoga?

Yoga has always been the preferred form of exercise for white-collar workers. However, medical experts believe that not everyone is suitable for practicing yoga. For people with cervical and lumbar diseases, doing yoga movements that involve excessive stretching and bending can easily lead to excessive compression of the intervertebral discs by the spine. Therefore, yoga is not as magical as many people say. It still needs to be decided based on one's physical condition.

Why do so many people suffer spinal injuries from practicing yoga?

"In clinical practice, I have encountered many patients who have cervical and lumbar spondylosis due to yoga practice." Medical experts said, "An important reason is that many white-collar workers go to the gym and often rush for results instead of proceeding step by step and persevering. When they are interested, they practice vigorously, but when they lose interest, they practice for a few days and rest for a few days. Especially those who try to show off their abilities and practice some difficult movements to compete with others can easily cause spinal injuries."

Another reason is that many fitness centers want to make money, so regardless of whether students are suitable for yoga or not, as long as they pay the money, they can participate in the training, so that people who cannot practice yoga also start to follow yoga. Moreover, most yoga instructors have no medical background and know nothing about human anatomy, but in their pursuit of "quick results", they cause injuries to students. It is reported that a 40-year-old Ms. Lin in Wuxi paid more than 10,000 yuan to learn yoga. After practicing shoulder-elbow handstand, she suffered cervical fracture and intervertebral disc herniation.

Who is not suitable for practicing yoga?

Yoga originated in India, and many local people have been practicing it since childhood. Children are flexible and less likely to get injured. In our country, most people start practicing halfway through their career. Their ligaments and bones have aged to a certain extent. Coupled with improper practice, injuries are inevitable! Doctors believe that the following four groups of people are not suitable for practicing yoga.

First, after entering middle age, ligaments and joints degenerate, and muscles become stiffer. Without strong muscle protection and support, forcing oneself to practice difficult yoga movements is undoubtedly a huge "challenge" for the already fragile cervical vertebrae and spine, and can easily lead to muscle strain and vertebral dislocation. Unless you have been practicing yoga since childhood and have good body flexibility.

Second, patients who already have osteoporosis, especially women with more severe osteoporosis. Due to the decrease in bone hardness and increase in brittleness, if you are not careful when practicing yoga, you may suffer from compression fractures or vertebral ruptures.

Third, patients with cervical and lumbar spine diseases. If you practice certain yoga movements, such as the plow pose, it can easily cause a herniated disc or make the original condition worse.

Fourth, patients with cardiovascular disease or obesity. If the movements are strenuous, such as doing a handstand, it is likely to increase the burden on the heart and cause discomfort. Don't blindly follow the four dangerous yoga moves

Yoga is a very good exercise to relax the body and mind. For the spine, moderate yoga practice can relax and stretch the muscles, enhance the toughness of muscle ligaments, and thus stabilize the spinal joints. In this sense, yoga has a certain spinal protective effect.

There are a lot of yoga poses that bend the spine forward and backward. If the bends exceed a certain degree, they may cause compression to the spine, which is not good for the bodies of many women and children. Especially for those who have never been exposed to yoga, they need to pay attention to protecting themselves when they start practicing, and not let their bodies be affected by practicing yoga.
