Alternate nostril breathing is the most calming of all yogic breathing techniques. The more air flows in and out of one nostril, the more dominant that nostril will be over the other, and this is normal. A healthy person should alternate breathing between the left and right okong, on average once every two hours. Sit in a comfortable position with your hands hanging naturally at the bottom of your clothes (Figure 1). First, touch your right hand to your temples. This part will be closed during practice. Sit in a comfortable position with your hands hanging naturally at the bottom of your clothes (Figure 1). First, touch your right hand to your temples. This part will be closed during practice. Bend the index finger and middle finger of your right hand toward the palm (Figure 2), press the right nostril with your right thumb, close the right nostril (Figure 3), gently inhale through the left nostril, then press the left nostril with your right ring finger, close the left nostril, release the thumb and exhale through the right nostril (Figure 4). Don't press hard on your nose, just press gently. Still keeping your left nostril closed, inhale through your right nostril, then close your right nostril with your thumb and exhale through your left nostril. Always start by inhaling through the left nostril and end by exhaling through the left nostril, with the breathing rhythm being left-right-left, thus forming a complete cycle. When practicing, keep your elbows raised and your shoulders soft and relaxed, not tense. Practice 12 rounds, then close your eyes and relax, and resume your normal breathing rhythm. Alternate nostril breathing is the most calming method of yoga breathing. It can balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain and give people a sense of peace and tranquility. Alternate nostril breathing is also often performed together with suspended breath, but it is not suitable for pregnant women. |
