The longer you run, the more calories you burn. If you can't keep running for long periods of time, you might as well gradually increase your running time every week.

"In the beginning, a recommended approach is to create a plan of incremental increases of five minutes at a time," says international exercise trainer Bud Coates.

Women who have successfully lost weight can usually maintain effective exercise for up to an hour, which is nearly 50-100% more than the standard daily exercise time. But this is a slow process, so don't increase your total mileage by more than 10% in a week.

Go Faster

Coates says moving faster is more effective at burning calories because you can cover more distance in the same amount of time.

Maintain a comfortable pace for 10 minutes. Then gradually increase the speed every minute or close to one minute, for a total of five times (about 10 minutes). Increase the speed intervals over time, or increase your speed every two minutes, with one minute of that time spent at a jogging pace.

Go Up——Run higher

More effort means more calories burned. If you have three or four prominent hills within your area, jog on them once a week. Or you can use a treadmill instead of the hills: every five minutes of running without an incline is equivalent to two minutes of running with an incline of about 10 degrees.

As you improve your fitness, you can increase the angle or duration.

Go Double——Double your calorie consumption

Start the second part of your exercise routine, such as doing some moderate exercise immediately after you finish your run.

(During the 15 minutes, chat with your partner and do some light exercise to get your heart rate back to normal.) By doubling your activity, "you'll extend the time you're effectively exercising," Coates says. This means that calories will be consumed faster and in greater quantities.
