“If you want to live long, keep your intestines clean” is from Lun Heng, a work by Wang Chong, a scholar in the Han Dynasty. There is another sentence after it: “If you want to be immortal, keep your intestines free of impurities”.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the foundation of human health lies in the normal rise and fall of Qi, and smooth bowel movements are one of the important factors in maintaining the normal rise and fall of Qi. The nutrients in food absorbed and utilized by the human body belong to Qing Yang, while feces belong to Zhuo Yin. The clear yang should rise, and the turbid yin should sink. If defecation is not smooth and the turbid yin cannot settle, the rise of the clear yang will be affected and various uncomfortable symptoms will occur.

How can I keep my bowel movements smooth?

First of all, you need to increase exercise appropriately. Exercise can increase Yang energy, and stool needs Yang energy to be pushed out of the body. When increasing exercise, pay attention to the amount of exercise and the choice of exercise method. You should ensure 40 minutes to 1 hour of activity time every day; the amount of exercise should be increased gradually from small to large, and it is best if each activity can make the whole body warm and you seem to sweat but don't sweat. The type of exercise may vary according to personal preference, but attention should be paid to moving the lower limbs. Walking and swimming after meals are the best.

Next, abdominal massage. The ancients called abdominal massage "rubbing the abdomen".

Specific method: Place your palms close to the skin surface and rub your abdomen in a circular motion in a clockwise direction. Start from the epigastric area, make circles and move downward until you reach the lower abdomen. You can do this while taking a walk after a meal, massaging your abdomen as you walk.

If accompanied by anorectal diseases such as hemorrhoids, you can cooperate with anal lifting: relax your whole body, inhale through your nose, slowly and evenly, while inhaling, close your anus tightly, lift your anus and perineum with force, and slightly retract your lower abdomen and abdomen at the same time; pause for a moment, relax, and exhale slowly. As you exhale, slowly relax your abdomen and anus. Do this tightening and loosening motion 10 to 15 times.

To maintain smooth bowel movements, you also need to adjust your diet, eat more vegetables and fruits, and reduce the intake of high-fat foods, especially at dinner.
