The world's top ten travel taboos: Don't kiss casually when saying goodbye at the station

Most people who travel abroad are always concerned about local customs, worrying that they will make mistakes and cause misunderstandings. The following are common travel taboos to help you travel better:

1. Chopsticks

There are many sayings about chopsticks. In Japan, you cannot leave your chopsticks in your rice bowl for any reason, as this is considered a bad omen. Because chopsticks standing upright in a rice bowl remind Japanese people of a tombstone. Moreover, it is impolite to use the chopsticks at the entrance to pick up food. You should use the other end. In China and many other countries, it is also impolite to point at others with chopsticks.

2. Visit a mosque

Everyone, Muslim or non-Muslim, is required to take off their shoes before entering a mosque. Visitors should also follow Muslim dress codes: Men should wear long trousers and long-sleeved shirts; women should cover all exposed skin, although the strictness of this varies from country to country. Women are required to wear a headscarf, and if you don't have one, you can borrow one at the entrance to many large halal markets.

3. Send flowers

In Ukraine, if you plan to send flowers, make sure you have an odd number of bouquets, as even-numbered bouquets are given at funerals. If you are sending flowers to a hostess, or to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion, avoid giving yellow flowers or Easter lilies, as these flowers are also reserved for funerals.

4. Kissing

In Cheshire, England, train passengers are not allowed to linger on the platform, say goodbye affectionately or kiss. If you really have a lot of parting words to say or want a kiss, you can go to the kissing area.

5. Salt

Although Egyptians are very hospitable, their cooking is somewhat gentle and self-serving. When traveling in Egypt, do not add salt to your bowl as this is seen as an insult to the cook. Fortunately, Egyptian food was still delicious, thanks to the Egyptians' frequent use of garlic, onions, and other aromatics in their cooking.

6. Visit a church

If you plan to visit a church in Italy in a warm climate, don't just pack shorts and a sleeveless top when you set out. Visitors to the Italian Catholic Cathedral must dress carefully; shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed for both men and women. There will be guards or parishioners checking at the church door, so remember to bring a long-sleeved shirt or other pullover when you leave.

7. V sign for success

In Great Britain, do not make the "V" sign with your palm facing inward, as this is considered a provocation or insult. It is said that the two-finger salute originated from the Hundred Years' War between England and France. France threatened to cut off the fingers of all British archers, but in the end Britain won a great victory, so it showed off its fingers to show that they were intact.

8. Insulting the King

Thais regard their 80-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej as a deity and use his image as amulets in the hope of bringing good luck. Therefore, insulting him would be considered a crime and punishable by 15 years in prison.

9. Clinking glasses

Hungarians do not clink glasses when toasting because the Austrians once celebrated by clinking glasses after killing 13 Hungarian martyrs. For the next 150 years, no Hungarian clinked glasses in a toast. Although it has been a long time now, this tradition is still preserved. For tourists, it is much easier to remember this tradition than the Hungarian word for cheers.

10. Eat all the food on the plate

In Cambodia, if you eat all the food on your plate, it means that the host has not treated you well because you are not full and still want more.
