What's the longest time you can hold your breath underwater?

Every summer, many people like to go swimming at the beach. The main purpose is to prevent heatstroke and cool down. However, when swimming, you must learn to hold your breath underwater. Many people find it difficult to practice holding your breath. Generally speaking, most normal people can hold their breath for about 3 minutes to minutes. So what is the longest time you can hold your breath underwater? Many people are curious about this question, let’s take a look at it together!

World free diving champion Gianluca Ginoni practiced the turtle breathing technique in the swimming pool for 18 minutes and 3.69 seconds, breaking the world record for the longest time holding breath underwater!

Gianluca Ginoni started the challenge in a swimming pool in Evansville, Mantua, Italy. Witnessed by officials from the Italian Timing Association, Ginoni first took oxygen supplements, put on a mask and breathed pure oxygen for 30 minutes, then

He was lowered to the bottom of the pool like an executioner, and lasted for 18 minutes, 3 seconds and 69 seconds before he surfaced to the applause and cheers of the crowd. At this moment, his face was distorted with pain, and his lips had turned purple due to lack of oxygen.

The doctor then gave Ginoni a comprehensive physical examination and found that his body was almost exhausted to the limit.

Most people estimate that 30 to 60 seconds is normal, while trained professionals can reach three to five minutes, and even longer in some special cases.

To practice holding your breath underwater, increase the time of diving. First, you should exercise your physical fitness, do more negative oxygen exercises, improve your lung capacity, and then practice underwater. When you first start practicing in the water, don't do too much exercise and time, and do it gradually.

It is very easy for ordinary people to practice for 3-4 minutes. But you have to be careful when you are training to hold your breath, because after training your body is actually in a very oxygen-deficient state, and you will obviously feel that you don't feel any discomfort, as if you don't want to breathe at all. Therefore, if you are not careful or if your heart and lung functions are not good, it is easy to pass away, which is what we often call out of breath. Good freestyle diving enthusiasts and breath-holding masters are also constantly facing such life threats, so if you practice breath-holding according to the method, you must be careful and don't force yourself to prolong the time.

The correct initial practice method is to take a deep breath first, inhale until you can't take any more, and exhale until you can't take any more. The whole process should be calm and even. It takes about 5 minutes from the time when you feel a slight dizziness or sleepiness to when this feeling completely disappears. At this time, start holding your breath and look at the time. You will find that holding your breath for one and a half to two minutes is very easy even if it is your first time practicing. If you feel uncomfortable, such as you can't hold it anymore, or you feel dizzy, stop immediately and don't force it. Just practice a few times a day, but the interval between them should be at least 1 hour. You will soon improve to around 3 points. However, if the feeling of sleepiness and dizziness intensifies, do not practice anymore to avoid brain deprivation of oxygen. And don't force yourself to increase the time or training volume. After all, we don't want to create any miracles. We just want to improve our cardiopulmonary function appropriately and satisfy our curiosity.

From the above we can see that the longest time of holding breath underwater is more than ten minutes, which is beyond the reach of ordinary people. Generally speaking, if you want to achieve this effect, you must contact a professional, so we’d better not force ourselves. Practicing holding breath underwater should also be gradual and proceed slowly.
