Nine out of ten people are wrong! Five mistakes you're bound to make when running

It is difficult for runners to detect their own mistakes, which can easily lead to health problems such as pain and injury. The latest article on the Popular Health Network published "5 Mistakes You've Made While Running That You Might Not Think of" summarized by Gregory Holtzman, professor of physical therapy at the University of Washington, to serve as a reminder for everyone.

1. Taking too many steps or swinging your arms improperly. These two are the main causes of back pain in runners. Taking too big a step can cause the body to twist too much, affecting the health of the pelvis and spine; swinging the arms too much can also cause the spine to deviate.

2. Asymmetric running pattern. When running, you can tell by listening whether one foot is landing harder than the other. This phenomenon indicates that there is an inherent mechanism error in the running pattern, which is easy to be overlooked and can easily lead to foot pain or injury.

3. Bowed knees and weak hips. The real reason your knees bend inward when running is that your gluteal muscles are not strong enough. When running, your knees should be as wide as your hips. If your hip muscles are weak and unable to support your body weight, gravity will be transferred to your knees, causing your knees to bend inward.

4. "Heel type" is confused with "forefoot type". For "heel-type" runners, the heel of the foot is more powerful when the foot lands on the ground; while for "forefoot-type" runners, the forefoot is under greater force during running. The "heel type" puts more force on the foot during running than the "forefoot type". Some "forefoot" runners have problems because the front of their feet isn't strong enough to support their body weight. If any problems arise, a physiotherapist should be consulted.

5. Not knowing the shape of your feet. People who are unaware that they have flat arches are more likely to get injured while running. Experts say that if you don’t understand the type of your feet, it is easy to choose inappropriate shoes. It is best to go to a professional shoe store and choose suitable running shoes under the guidance of professionals.
