Drowning is the most common safety hazard in swimming. So what should you do if you drown? 1. How to prevent drowning.

Swimming is one of the favorite sports activities among young people. However, if one is not well prepared, lacks safety awareness, panics when encountering an accident, and cannot remain calm and save oneself, drowning accidents are very likely to occur.

In order to ensure swimming safety and prevent drowning accidents, the following points must be achieved:

1. Do not go swimming alone, and do not go swimming in places where you are not familiar with the water conditions or in dangerous places where drowning accidents are likely to occur. To choose a good swimming place, you need to have a clear understanding of the environment of the place, such as whether the reservoir or bathing beach is sanitary, whether the underwater area is flat, whether there are reefs, undercurrents, weeds, and the depth of the water area.

2. Swimming must be organized and led by a teacher or someone familiar with water. To take care of each other. If you go swimming as a group, you should count the number of people before and after entering the water and designate a lifeguard to provide safety protection.



3. You should be aware of your physical health. People who are prone to cramps in their limbs should not participate in swimming or swim in deep water. Be well prepared before going into the water and move your body around first. If the water temperature is too low, rinse your body with water in shallow water first, and then go swimming after you adapt to the water temperature. Students with dentures should remove them to prevent them from falling into the esophagus or trachea in case of choking on water.

4. Be aware of your own ability in water. Do not show off after entering the water. Do not jump or dive rashly. Do not fight with others to avoid drinking water and drowning. Do not swim in rapids or whirlpools, and do not swim after drinking.

5. If you suddenly feel unwell while swimming, such as dizziness, nausea, palpitations, shortness of breath, etc., you should immediately go ashore to rest or call for help.



2. The drowning person should not panic, but should remain calm and actively save himself:

1. For those who have cramps in their hands and feet, if the cramps are in the fingers, you can clench your fists and then open them forcefully, repeating this several times quickly until the cramps are gone.

2. If your calf or toes are cramping, first take a breath and float on your back in the water. Use the hand on the opposite side of the cramping limb to hold the toes of the cramping limb and pull it towards your body. At the same time, press the palm of the same hand on the knee of the cramping limb to help straighten the cramping leg. If your thigh is cramping, you can use the same method of stretching the cramping muscles to solve it.



3. For drowning people, in addition to actively saving themselves, they should also actively carry out land rescue:

1. If there is mud, weeds and vomit in the mouth and nose of the drowning person, it should be cleared first to keep the upper respiratory tract open;

2. If the drowning person has drunk a lot of water, the rescuer can kneel on one leg and bend the other leg, place the drowning person's abdomen on the bent thigh, hold the drowning person's head with one hand, turn his mouth downward, and press the other hand on his back to drain the water;



4. How to rescue drowning patients?

1. Clear obstructions in the mouth and nose.

Turn the drowning person's head down, clear the debris in his mouth with your fingers, and then use your palm to quickly and continuously hit the back of his shoulders to clear his airway and make sure his tongue does not move backwards to block the breathing passage.



2. After the respiratory tract is opened, the water accumulated in the respiratory tract should be drained out immediately.

The rescuer kneels on one leg and bends the other leg, and places the drowning person facedown on the bent thigh with his head and feet hanging down. The rescuer then shakes his thigh or presses on the drowning person's back to pour out the water in the respiratory tract. Or the rescuer lets the drowning person lie facedown on the rescuer's shoulders with his head and feet hanging down, and the water in the respiratory tract can be poured out when the rescuer runs back and forth. Be careful not to hold the drowning person with his head up.



3. The time of pouring water should not be too long

After the water is spit out, perform artificial respiration immediately. Place the drowning person on his back with his head tilted back. Pinch his nostrils with one hand and blow air gently from mouth to mouth. Note whether the drowning person's chest rises and falls. If so, it means the airway is unobstructed. Do six breaths as fast as you can, then twelve per minute until you return to normal breathing.



4. External cardiac massage

If the patient's heart and breathing have stopped, external chest compression should be performed immediately. The patient should lie on his back on the ground, and the person performing the compression should place his left palm on the lower 1/3 of the patient's sternum. Press your right palm on the back of your left hand and press vertically downward to sink your sternum 2-3 cm. Then relax at a frequency of 60-70 times per minute. Care should be taken to control the pressure to avoid excessive force that may cause rib fractures, pericardial effusion, liver rupture, etc. For children, press with one hand. If you can feel the carotid artery pulse, it means that the cardiac compression is effective.



If the drowning person is unconscious, his breathing is very weak or he has stopped breathing, in addition to the above treatment, artificial respiration should be performed. The drowning person can be made to lie on his back, and the rescuer can stand beside him and pinch the drowning person's nose with one hand and support his jaw with the other hand, take a breath, and then blow air into the drowning person's mouth with his mouth. After blowing a breath, leave the drowning person's mouth, release the hand that is pinching his nose, and press the drowning person's chest with your hand to help him exhale. Repeat this regularly, about 14-20 times per minute. It can be a little slow at the beginning and can be accelerated appropriately later.
