Taboos of Karate that Newbies Must Know

Karate originated in the Ryukyu Islands today, also known as empty hand, is a fighting technique, similar to our country's martial arts. There are many stories about its origins, but if you want to practice karate, for novices, you must understand some taboos so that you can better deepen the practice of karate.

1. When receiving instructions from the coach in the dojo, you should act and respond immediately. (Do not waste time) Private fighting practice is not allowed without a coach present. You are not allowed to leave the formation without the coach's permission. When leaving, you must not walk between the coach and the lineup, and should leave behind the lineup.

2. The coach’s title should be addressed respectfully, such as senior, teacher, normal, etc.

3. Eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum is not allowed in the dojo.

4. When entering or leaving the dojo, you must face the dojo and bow while saying "osu!" This symbolizes respect for the dojo and the students in the dojo.

5. When entering the dojo late, you should first kneel down at the back of the dojo facing the back until the coach allows you to enter. Then you can stand up, face the front, salute and say "osu!" before you can line up from the last row. (Try to avoid being late!)

6. When the coach speaks to you, respond loudly with "osu!" Practice is a very serious matter. You must be absolutely focused during the practice and are not allowed to talk, laugh, or disturb other students. If there are no instructions, you should wait for them in the "stand still" position. Under any circumstances, you must absolutely obey the coach's orders.

7. Fingernails and toenails should not be too long and should always be kept clean. During the break, you should practice more, avoid chatting, making noise, and wasting time. Keeping the dojo clean, tidy and safe is the common responsibility of all students. Unless there are special circumstances or ceremonies, students may wear a neat T-shirt under their kimono. Taoist robes must always be kept clean, and the belts cannot be wet-washed but can only be air-dried, to symbolize the spirit of hard work and training.

8. Do not wear any accessories during practice. Pagers and mobile phones must be turned off in the dojo.
