Running is a basic ability that humans are born with. It has been a form of competition since ancient times and has been described in the literature of almost every country. According to historical records, sprinting was the only competitive event in the ancient Greek Olympics in 776 BC, with a distance of 192.27 meters. Modern sprinting originated in Europe and was first included in the official competition at the Oxford University Games in 1850, when there were 100-yard, 330-yard, and 440-yard events.

The men's decathlon includes the 100-meter run, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400-meter run on the first day, and the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1,500-meter run on the second day. The first day of the women's heptathlon includes the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200-meter run, and the second day includes the long run, javelin, and 800-meter run.

According to the results of each individual event, the all-around scoring table formulated by the IAAF is checked, and the ranking is calculated by adding up the total scores, with the one with the highest total score ranked first. Athletes must participate in all events. If they give up an event, they cannot participate in subsequent events and their total scores will not be counted. However, if there is no score in an event due to low score or failure, the total score can still be calculated.
