What are some yoga methods for correcting scoliosis?

The so-called scoliosis, also known as scoliosis in clinical practice, is a very serious problem. It means that the patient's spine is deformed and there is an obvious curvature of the spine, which will seriously affect the person's activity function. Patients usually need to go to a regular hospital for treatment. Severe cases require surgical treatment. In addition, relevant functional exercises should be done in daily life, such as yoga to help correct. So how to do specific yoga movements?

Yoga for Scoliosis Correction:

Spread your feet slightly wider than your hips, place your hands behind your back, interlace your fingers, lift them up from the bottom, bend over, lean forward, and bring your body close to your thighs.

Stand with your feet slightly wider than your hips, turn your left foot 90 degrees to the left, raise your arms to the sides, lean forward, touch your left foot with your right hand, and look at your left hand.

Stand with your feet hip-width apart, place your hands in front of your chest with your fingers interlaced, stretch your waist, tilt your head back as far as possible, and raise your hands high.

Kneel on your knees, hip-width apart, support yourself with your hands, shoulder-width apart, lift your right leg, and extend your right hand parallel to the ground. Put it down in reverse order, switch sides, and repeat.

Sit down, bend your left leg, straighten your right leg to the right, hold your right ankle with your right hand, raise your left hand close to your head with your palm facing outwards, bend over, and lean forward until your palm touches the ground.

There are two types of scoliosis: structural and functional. Many people develop mild functional scoliosis due to the same habits in their lives (such as carrying a crossbody bag for many years). This spinal misalignment is related to muscle development rather than body structure.

Another type of structural scoliosis affects the structure of the body and is usually discovered in childhood. The severity will vary from person to person, but structural scoliosis can cause tight muscles on one side of the body and can even cause the lungs to have less room to breathe due to a collapsed rib cage.

Most people with scoliosis already receive treatment or at least children are checked regularly. So how can we easily determine whether a person has scoliosis?

As shown in the picture, stand with your hands flat in front of you and put your palms together. Relax your body naturally and move forward and downward. At this time, the condition of your spine will be revealed, showing whether you have scoliosis problems.

What can yoga do for scoliosis?

Through yoga, you can understand the body in more detail. When you practice yoga poses that can help correct scoliosis, you relax contracted muscles and strengthen weaker muscles. Likewise, the key to yoga is to be understood and accepted. You can’t expect yoga to magically correct your spine, but it can help treat your body well and promote physical health and balance.
