Taekwondo is a martial art that mainly relies on leg techniques. The flexible use of footwork in actual combat is extremely important to ensure that the power of the legs is fully utilized and victory is achieved in actual combat. When using leg techniques, the back leg is mostly used to attack, so the footwork of Taekwondo has distinct characteristics, that is, the center of gravity falls between the two feet or is biased towards the front foot, and the body posture is mostly sideways, in order to protect the body and the vital parts below and to enable the back leg to generate force by twisting the waist and turning the hips, thereby increasing the power and speed of the strike.

Common steps are as follows:

(1) Forward progress

Start in a standard combat stance, with your feet in a slanted horse stance and your fists clenched in front of your chest. When moving forward, push the ground with your back foot and step forward, turn the body to the side and into a slanting horse stance on the other side. This can be done continuously. This is a step forward. Pay attention to twisting your waist and hips. When moving forward, the back foot pushes the ground and the front foot slides forward, which is called a forward slide; the back foot pushes the ground and the front foot jumps forward, which is called a forward leap. The forward slide and forward leap are forward steps, and are used during active attack.

(2) Step Back

Start from a standard combat stance, push the ground with the front foot, take a step back with the back foot, and let the front foot move back with the ground, while both feet and body maintain the original stance. If the front foot pushes the ground and then the back foot slides backward along the ground one step, and the front foot also slides backward one step, and both feet and body remain in the original posture, it is called a backward sliding step. This footwork can create distance between you and your opponent, avoid his attack, and prepare for a counterattack.

(3) Step Back

Start from the standard combat stance, with the front of the back foot as the axis, lift the front foot and step back through the inner side of the back foot to form a combat stance opposite to the original one. The retreat step can be changed left or right according to actual combat needs to adjust the relative distance from the opponent and prepare for attack or counterattack.

(4) Jump and change steps

Start from a standard combat stance, push off the ground with both feet simultaneously to lift the body into the air, swap feet back and forth in mid-air while turning the body; when landing, the body is in the ready stance on the other side. The jump when changing steps should not be too high, just slightly off the ground; when changing steps, you should twist your waist and hips, quickly and nimbly. The purpose is to interfere with the opponent's offensive and defensive thinking, choose a position suitable for your own attack and change the scoring part of your body to prevent the opponent from scoring.
