While yoga isn’t a panacea for being a mom, it can help reduce your stress levels. In fact, stress can hinder conception, so it could be that the calming, relaxing effects of yoga may increase your chances of conceiving.

In a widely reported study of infertile women, those who participated in a stress-reduction program (including mind-body therapies like yoga, or a weekly support group) were more likely to become pregnant than those who did nothing to cope with stress. Participants in the mind-body group and the support group met for two hours one evening each week for 10 weeks. Of the women who participated in the study for a year, 55% of those in the mind-body group and 54% of those in the support group had successfully become pregnant, compared with only 20% of those in the group that took no action.

Why does stress hinder conception? The reason is that when you are under chronic stress, your brain switches into survival mode, which boosts the production of stress hormones like cortisone and adrenaline while slowing down the production of reproductive hormones. This can disrupt ovulation and make conception more difficult. Of course, a little stress is normal, but if you feel tired all the time, it's time to address your stress issue head-on.

If you decide to try yoga, it's best to choose a gentle yoga class like basic yoga or hatha yoga rather than a power yoga class like ashtanga yoga or hot yoga. Slower yoga classes give you more time and space to slow your breathing and calm your mind.

If the pressure of having a baby makes you and your husband lose all interest in sex, try doing yoga with him. Bending and stretching as a couple not only relaxes both of you, but also provides a chance to connect and share quality time outside of the bedroom.

This shows that practicing yoga can help with pregnancy.
