The ability to enter a meditative state immediately after sitting down requires long-term practice to achieve. Yoga divides it into eight stages, and one must practice according to each stage to achieve success. At the final stage, I believe that anyone can progress to the point where they can enter the state of meditation by “just sitting in silence.” First stage of abstinence There are five steps to "fasting" and it is the basis for practicing meditation. The so-called "taboos" are not to restrict actions or narrow one's scope of action, but the five simplest steps to make oneself move towards the second stage more safely. Just like parents raising their children, "when the child crawls, they hope to be able to stand, and then walk." The five steps are the preparation stage for taking the first step safely. 1. No killing, no violence The guilt caused by killing and violence will consume a lot of "Qi". 2. Honesty and integrity Because concealing dishonest behavior consumes a lot of "Chi". 3. Do not steal Stealing other people's property, losing trust and credibility, etc. will also reduce your own "chi". 4. Brahmacharya A lifestyle that goes against the will of heaven will only result in “little benefit and much labor” and will waste “energy”. 5. Don’t be greedy In order to satisfy endless desires (greed), one must pay a lot of price, which affects the balance of Qi. Second stage of persuasion The steps in the second stage are life wisdom to avoid disordering the "Qi" due to inner tension in daily life. 1. Purity The wisdom of living a life that purifies the body and mind and does not harm the health of the body and mind. 2. Be content A lifestyle that is completely dominated by desires will eventually make you a slave to desires. 3. Asceticism A lifestyle that moves towards a meaningful life according to destiny may seem painful to others, but it actually means that you are moving towards the state of nirvana. 4. Reading We need to have language skills that can increase our vitality, enhance our strength, and generate courage. 5. Pray to God Consider your existence, the work you are given, and your relationships as blessings from God, and be grateful to God. After going through the first stage of "prohibition" and the second stage of "persuasion", we have made basic preparations in terms of living habits, laying the foundation for the following stages of practice. The third stage of adjustment This stage focuses on adjusting the abnormal physical constitution caused by bad habits developed in daily life, and restoring the original state of Qi. This stage is to let everyone know that the "yoga gymnastics" (yoga postures) representing yoga are the body's preparatory movements for entering meditation. Fourth stage of pranayama This stage is the basic practice of yoga. There is a saying that goes “If your breathing is disordered, your mind will be disordered”, so adjusting your breathing can adjust the disordered energy, which is a very important step in practicing meditation. Stage 5: Controlling Feelings When adjusting the body in asanas (postures) or practicing meditation naturally, centering is a very important technique, which means concentrating the sensation (heat or flow of qi) on a certain part of the body. Stage 6: Concentrated Consciousness This stage is about practicing control of the mind during meditation. Set a certain theme, such as "Spirit", and focus your Qi on this theme. In this way, your heart will gradually become calm, and the movement of your Qi will become more stable. Stage 7 Meditation This stage is a continuation of the previous stage of concentrated consciousness, and is a relay station towards the state of samadhi and entering a deep trance state. The sixth, seventh and eighth stages are collectively called "Sanyama", which is the entrance to opening the third eye and discovering the truth in things. The Eighth Stage of Samadhi In daily life, we often hear the word "samadhi", which means a state of dissolving into an object and becoming one with it. During this stage, one should indulge in "meditation samadhi" to restore the natural state. |
