Keeping your body moving is essential to a healthy lifestyle. But sometimes it's best to check with your doctor before starting an exercise program. Regular exercise can help control your weight, reduce your risk of heart disease, and strengthen your bones and muscles. But if you haven't exercised in a long time and have health concerns, you may want to talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

When to consult your doctor

Although moderate exercise, such as walking, is safe for most people. But health experts recommend that if you have any of the following conditions, you should talk to your doctor before starting to exercise: 1. People with heart disease. 2. People with asthma and lung disease. 3. People with diabetes, liver disease or kidney disease. 4. People with arthritis.

You should also consult your doctor if you have signs of heart or lung disease, or some other serious medical condition. Other serious illnesses include: 1. Pain or discomfort in the chest, neck, jaw, or arms during exercise. 2. Dizziness or loss of consciousness. 3. Shortness of breath during moderate exertion, resting, lying down and sleeping, 4. Swelling of ankles, especially at night. 5. Heart murmurs or a sudden acceleration of the heartbeat. 6. Your muscles hurt when you climb stairs or mountains, but the pain goes away when you rest.

Finally, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends that you see your doctor before participating in intense exercise if you have two or more of the following conditions: 1. Men over the age of 45 or women over the age of 55. 2. Family history of heart disease before the age of 55. 3. You smoke or just quit smoking six months before exercise. 4. You haven’t exercised for three months or more. 5. People who are extremely obese. 6. Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. 6. Your glucose tolerance is impaired, which can also be said to mean you have prediabetes.
