Timing belt breakage signs

Timing belt breakage signs

The timing belt is a relatively important part of a car. Compared with other parts of the car, its lifespan is relatively short. Just like broken things always need to be repaired, old things always need to be replaced, things like timing belts should be replaced on time and regularly to prevent car failures. However, this kind of thing is generally more expensive, so it cannot be replaced frequently. But we can check the timing belt every time we maintain the car.

Timing belt uses:

The role of the timing belt is to connect the upper and lower parts. The upper part is connected to the timing wheel of the engine cylinder head, and the lower part is connected to the timing wheel of the crankshaft. The timing wheel is connected to the camshaft, which has a cam on it, and its contact point is the small rocker arm. The rocker arm generates pressure through the power brought by the timing belt, which plays a lifting role. The role of lifting the intake valve is to allow atomized gasoline to enter the cylinder body, and when lifting the exhaust valve, it allows exhaust gas to discharge from the cylinder body. When the concave (note: not the convex part) of the camshaft contacts the small rocker arm at the same time, the intake valve and exhaust valve are closed, the compression ratio is generated, the distributor ignites, internal combustion starts and power is generated!

Note:

Regular maintenance

Today, as cars become more and more advanced, the workload of maintenance will gradually decrease. As a result, car owners often believe that their vehicles rarely need repairs. And each automobile manufacturer has clearly stipulated the cycle for routine inspection and replacement of timing belts. As a professional maintenance technician, you should explain this to the car owner: as part of regular maintenance and comprehensive inspection, the maintenance of the timing belt should be added to the regular maintenance procedure. If this is ignored and the faulty timing belt is not checked regularly and replaced in time, serious consequences may occur.

Unlike the drive belts of the attachments, they are easily visible and easy to inspect. The timing belt is often hidden behind a cover and can only be accessed depending on the layout of the engine and engine compartment. However, in most cases, the timing belt cover, at least the top half of the cover, can be removed or removable, allowing you to more closely inspect and replace the belt. If you see anything other than a well-maintained, properly tensioned belt during inspection, you should replace it promptly.

Crack inspection

When the timing belt breaks, if the belt is bitten, the valve will be stuck in the open position and the engine will stop running; if the engine is idling when it breaks, it means that there is a gap between the piston at the top of the stroke and the open valve. In both cases, the rupture only damages the timing belt itself. However, if the engine is an "interference fit" design, where the piston and valves occupy the same space with no clearance between them, then damage to other components will soon occur, such as valve bending and piston stamping. These failures will cost customers more money and they will also have to face the inconvenience of not being able to use their cars for a long time. Therefore, customers should be made aware of the importance of regular inspection and timely replacement of timing belts. At the same time, users should also be made aware that replacing the timing belt during routine maintenance is much cheaper than having it towed to a repair shop for an overhaul later.

You'll benefit from increased revenue, busy employees, and customers' greater awareness of scheduled maintenance. Some repair shops overlook the repair opportunities provided by scheduled timing belt maintenance. And as a repair shop operator, you should remember: when a vehicle is in your shop, you have the opportunity to repair it and make the customer satisfied. This is your chance to make money. However, if the belt is damaged while the vehicle is driving, the vehicle will be towed to another nearby repair shop. This means that not only do you lose customers and the opportunity to repair your vehicle, but you also lose the possibility of making money.

Just because the timing belt isn't cracked doesn't mean it doesn't have issues. As the belt gets older, it tends to stretch more than the tensioner can compensate for, causing the timing sprocket to slip. Wear of gear teeth and adhesion of lubricating oil can also cause slippage. During inspection, if the belt shows signs of reduced hardness, abrasion, fiber breakage, or cracks or fissures, it means that the belt is damaged and cannot be used any further. Next, check for sprocket failure. A damaged sprocket can "burn" belt material and increase belt tooth wear. A faulty sprocket can also cause the valve train to create more resistance against the timing belt.

Timing belt replacement: three years or 50,000 kilometers. The time for a new car can be extended appropriately!

Premonition:

1. The timing belt has obvious cracks

2. If the belt hardness decreases, abrasion, fiber breakage, or cracks occur, it means that the belt is damaged and cannot be used any more. It must be replaced.
