The muscular layer of the vaginal wall is composed of two layers of smooth muscle (vaginal sphincter), an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer. Normally, women cannot actively contract the smooth muscles of their vagina, but in the moment of mutual affection and orgasm, the smooth muscles of the vagina will involuntarily contract in waves, just like stubborn hiccups, it is very difficult to stop them from contracting! But why do doctors recommend anal contraction exercises to elderly women who have pelvic organ prolapse and cannot control their urine (urinary incontinence), or to some women whose husbands complain that their vaginas are not as tight as before after giving birth? This is because the lower end of the female vagina is close to the vaginal opening, and the outside of the sphincter is reinforced by a muscle called the "levator ani muscle."
