The data shows that 36.5% of runners have the habit of drinking water as planned, and 8.9% even drink as much water as they have.

Another 29.6% of people mistakenly believe that they need to consume salt when running, and 57.6% of people will choose sports functional drinks because they contain electrolytes to prevent sodium deficiency in the blood. However, the actual reason why the human body lacks sodium while running is not because of not drinking water or functional drinks, but because of drinking too much water and drinks.

"Many athletes hold an unscientific belief that different hydration regimens have beneficial effects," researchers wrote in the June 2011 issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine. In its most severe form, drinking too much water while running can be fatal, triggering exercise-associated hyponatremia, a condition that can occur when athletes drink water even when they are not thirsty. In addition, drinking too much water will dilute the sodium in the blood, causing the concentration to be too low.
