Sanda was established by the State Sports Commission in 1979 in accordance with the modern competitive sports model. It allows the use of various techniques such as kicking, punching and throwing, but does not allow the use of grappling, elbows and knees, nor attacks on vital parts of the body such as the throat, eyes, crotch and back of the head. Athletes are divided by weight, wear protective gear and compete on an equal footing under the same conditions. In 1989, Sanda was approved by the State Sports Commission as an official competition event, and established "Team Championship" and "Individual Championship" competition systems.
