Swimmers don't have to choose. Most of them involve heavy aerobic exercise, such as swimming 1.5 kilometers or two round trips. But they also rely on middle-distance, lactic acid-tolerant, and very specific sprinting styles to subject themselves to frequent anaerobic challenges. As the distance gets shorter, the rest time between starts gets shorter. Sprinting exercises, when performed properly, can be just as effective as overloading to muscle failure in strength training.
