Disadvantages of climbing stairs to lose weight

Climbing stairs to lose weight can be done anytime and anywhere, regardless of time, season, or location. It also does not have the side effects of medication. Moreover, for many people, the weight loss effect is visible. It is generally considered a more reliable way to lose weight. Through aerobic exercise, the legs and the whole body are well exercised. But on the other hand, although climbing stairs to lose weight has certain advantages, it also has certain disadvantages, which are mainly for people with poor physical fitness or some special groups. Let’s briefly talk about the disadvantages of climbing stairs to lose weight.

Climbing stairs is a weight-bearing exercise. The joints below the waist have to bear the weight of the body, especially the knees, which are under the greatest pressure. When climbing stairs, the knee joints have to bear 3-4 times the body weight. Taking a person weighing 60 kg as an example, when walking on a flat road, each knee bears 60 kg of weight, but when climbing stairs, the weight on the knees becomes as high as 240 kg, which is equivalent to carrying the weight of a piano on each knee. And if you go faster, the pressure on your knees will increase. Moreover, when climbing stairs, the knee flexion increases, and the pressure between the patella and femur also increases accordingly, which will aggravate knee pain.

Therefore, people with certain medical conditions should not use stairs as exercise, such as:

1. People with knee joint diseases (such as degenerative arthritis) should try to avoid walking up and down stairs, especially not lifting heavy objects. It is better to take the elevator.

2. Pregnant women or people who are too obese put more pressure on the knee joints.

3. People with cardiovascular diseases should also be careful when climbing stairs, because the heart's demand for oxygen will increase. If there is not enough oxygen all of a sudden, it may lead to myocardial infarction. If they are not sent to the hospital for treatment in time, they may even die suddenly.

From the above introduction, we know that climbing stairs has not only advantages but also no disadvantages. Therefore, whether to choose this kind of exercise for weight loss depends on your own situation. If you choose to climb stairs to lose weight, it is best to pay attention to choose a well-ventilated floor and not to do it in a closed floor. At the same time, you should pay attention to stop immediately if you feel any discomfort to avoid accidents.
