Why is the abdomen the most likely place for fat to accumulate?

Why is the abdomen the part most prone to fat accumulation? You may think that it is due to long-term sitting at work. However, people who do not sit for long periods of time will also produce excess fat in the abdomen when they are obese. This shows that it is not only people who sit for long periods of time that are more likely to have fat accumulation in the abdomen. In other words, most people gain weight starting from the abdomen. Why is that?

The biggest difference between the abdomen and other parts is the type of abdominal muscles. In other words, the ability of the abdominal muscles to resist fat is very weak. The muscles in the abdomen are smooth muscles. This is an important factor that makes it easy for muscle fat to accumulate in the abdomen.

Smooth muscle is different from skeletal muscle in other parts of the body. This smooth muscle is mainly innervated by the autonomic nervous system. Skeletal muscles are controlled by human consciousness. Smooth muscle does not mean that both ends of every muscle fiber (i.e. muscle cell) are connected to the bones through tendons; smooth muscle cells are connected to each other to form tubular structures or hollow organs; functionally, they can cause organs to move and deform by shortening and generating tension, and can also produce continuous contraction or tonic contraction, so that the organs can resist the applied load and maintain their original shape. In other words, its main scope of work is based on the internal organs of the body.

In layman's terms, this type of muscle is very defensive (protective), but not very offensive (it's not that it's not aggressive, but its aggressiveness is much weaker than skeletal muscle). Its defensive nature is not to protect itself, but to protect the internal organs. This makes it so that when fat invades it, it does not know how to actively attack and consume fat, but only protects the internal organs. It can also be said that it is a loyal guard of the internal organs, but this loyal guard seems to be a bit stubborn in his thinking.

Due to this characteristic, it is not easy to develop abdominal muscles and it is easier to accumulate muscle fat. Once fat is present, it is not easy to get rid of it. Under this special condition, no matter how much abdominal exercise we do, it will not have much effect. This is also what everyone can feel during exercise, and this is the main reason.

When we understand this, we can make adjustments to the exercise. (All exercises must be done after understanding the most fundamental reasons) When there is fat in the abdomen, we do not use the abdominal muscles directly to consume it, so we can only choose an indirect method to achieve the goal, using overall exercise (aerobic running, skipping rope, cycling, etc.) to consume energy. During exercise, the body's fat is used to provide energy to maintain exercise. However, the fat in the abdomen is the most abundant. So when the body needs kinetic fat as energy, it will first send abdominal fat as a pioneer (because it is the easiest to obtain energy), thereby achieving the purpose of reducing abdominal fat.
